On 26 March 2021, the Ministry of Land and Natural Resources of Zambia held an event to launch the country’s first National Climate Change Learning Strategy. The ceremony brought together over 50 participants both online and in-person to celebrate this new chapter in Zambia’s efforts in the fight against climate change. The Minister of Land and Natural Resources, Hon. Jean Kapata, highlighted the importance of the strategy to achieve Zambia’s commitments under the Zambia’s Vision 2030 . The strategy is the result of a fruitful collaboration between ZEMA , ZCCN , UN CC:Learn , UNDP Zambia and MIET Africa , under the leadership of Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources , and with support from other relevant government Ministries, such as Finance and National Development Planning .
Zambia has been heavily hit by the impacts of climate change with droughts and floods increasing in intensity in the past years, which has been negatively affecting livelihoods and agricultural output. The newly launched Strategy sets out the country to develop and implement activities that will put the country in the right position to start addressing these challenges while cementing the country’s belief in bringing about positive change through education.
The Strategy has the following Strategic Objectives:
- Raise awareness and strengthen climate change knowledge
- Build individual and institutional capacity in climate change mitigation and adaptation
- Mainstream climate change learning into national priority sector policies and systems.
This set of objectives will be integrated in five key sectors: energy, forestry, agriculture, health and education. Moreover, mass media will play a crucial role in spreading climate change awareness and driving behavioral change. All actions and strategies to achieve the objectives will be divided in three categories: short-term (1-2 years), medium-term (3-5 years) and long-term (6-10 years), laying out a clear framework and timeframe for the accomplishment of each one of them.
